Discrimination, Climate Change Hurt Women-Led Households, UN Says: Women-led rural households are hurt worse by the impacts of climate change, a new UN report finds. Compared to male-headed households, families headed by women across 24 poor and middle-income countries lost an average of 8% more income due to heat waves and 3% more income due to floods. The report, which highlighted how women are prevented from responding or adapting to climate-fueled crises by discriminatory limits on their rights to control their own lives by limiting land rights and decision making over work, is yet another finding of the disproportionate harms borne by women as a result of the mutually-reinforcing crises of climate change and misogyny. 'Lost Winter' Ends With Meteorological Extremes: Ten days of extreme weather across the country — including a heatwave in the central U.S., a massive blizzard in California, and (ongoing) wildfires in Texas — punctuated the beginning of meteorological spring and capped what many are calling a "Lost Winter." The warmest winter on record across the contiguous 48 states, according to AccuWeather, smashed records across the northern part of the country, where cold winters help define regional identities. Buffalo, Detroit, and Cleveland all broke daily records on Monday with high temperatures in the 70s, Topeka Kansas hit 82°F on Sunday, and Fargo, North Dakota, saw average temperatures 14°F above average from December through February. Climate change, mainly caused by the extraction and combustion of fossil fuels, also creates conditions favorable for massive precipitation events like the blizzard that dumped as much as 11 feet of snow on California's Sierra Nevada mountains. Hearing Begins Over Puerto Rico Utility Debt Restructure: A crucial hearing in federal court regarding Puerto Rico's struggling power company and its proposed debt restructuring began Monday. Puerto Rico’s Electric Power Authority holds $9 billion in debt and has struggled to keep the lights on across an island replete with renewable energy resources but powered mainly by fossil fuels.
