Hot, humid weather is on the way for Wisconsin this week, with temperatures reaching into the 90s

Been waiting for summer-like heat and humidity to arrive to Wisconsin? This should be your week.

But if you've been dreading the return of summer temperatures, this will be a good week to check your air conditioning, plan an afternoon at a library, movie theater or a mall, or schedule an activity in your basement.

Monday will be another day of seasonable high temperatures in the 70s across Wisconsin, but Tuesday's and Wednesday's forecast will feel like Summer with a capital "S," with high temperatures in central and northeastern Wisconsin likely in the upper 80s and 90s, according to the National Weather Service forecast. Stir in "stick to your shirt"-level humidity those days, and we're talking the better part of the week when the weather will be typically summer-like.

The high humidity "will definitely be there Tuesday and Wednesday," said National Weather Service Meteorologist Scott Berschback. "Dewpoints are likely to be in the 70s, so it will definitely will be sticky."

Highs actually snuck into the 90s at Green Bay Austin Straubel International Airport on May 12 and 13, but the mercury fell back to seasonal temps — 70s and 60s — within a week. Green Bay has seen a high in the 80s once this month; that was this past Friday, when it was a pleasant 83 degrees with humidity in the low 50s.

Comparatively, encountering Tuesday and Wednesday temperature could feel like a wet, sticky towel across the face; 87 on Tuesday, 89 on Wednesday. The forecast for the overnight low says it won't fall below 73.

Berschback's recommendations? First, the elderly and others who are susceptible to extreme heat should avoid the outdoors, particularly when the temps peak in the afternoon. Wearing lightweight clothing and drinking plenty of water also helps — and if your home lacks air conditioning, this could be a great week to catch an afternoon movie, or visit a friend who has air conditioning in their house.

Also, it might be a good day to visit a beach along the lakeshore. People who have the ability to get to the lakefront will find it's not as hot there as it will be inland; the weather service predicts Tuesday's high in Sheboygan will be 77 degrees.

The Oshkosh and Appleton areas will see highs of 87 degrees and 91 degrees on Tuesday, respectively. Wednesday won't be much cooler either, with a high of 85 for Oshkosh and 90 for Appleton. Highs are predicted to be 91 in Wausau and Marshfield and 94 in both Stevens Point and Wisconsin Rapids on Tuesday, and could exceed 90 both days in Milwaukee.

Green Bay's forecast calls for highs in the 82-83 range Thursday and Friday, with lower humidity levels that will make the heat feel considerably less oppressive.
